Apple’s wireless AirPods now available

After being delayed from the original October launch, Apple’s new wireless AirPods are now available online. The AirPods will set you back a cool $159, and shipping currently as of this writing is four weeks.

Apple says they need “a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers,” but didn’t give us exactly as to the reason why they were delayed.

Apple released this press release this morning. Apple says the AirPods are currently available in limited quantities during its launch, and that brick and mortar stores will receive them in sufficient quantities starting next week. Apple Authorized Resellers and select carriers will begin receiving them next week as well. AirPods will be available in over 100 markets, including the US, UK, UAE, Australia, Germany, India, and Mexico.

With Apple removing the headphone jack in the iPhone 7, they designed their own solution to the wireless headphone. Featuring an Apple-designed W1 Chip to ease the connection process, beam-forming mics to help in quiet and loud areas and Siri integration just by touching the sides of the headphone.

With AirPods, setting up and using wireless headphones has never been easier. Just open the charging case near your iPhone and with a simple tap, AirPods are immediately set up with all the devices signed into your iCloud account, including your Apple Watch, iPad and Mac. Advanced sensors detect when AirPods are in your ear and can automatically play and pause your music. Double tapping on AirPods activates Siri, allowing you to access your favorite personal assistant to select and control your music, get directions, make and receive calls or perform any other Siri task.

No word on the Beats X, though. We expect those to launch in January. Like many, I hope to get my hands on a pair soon.

Update 12/14 at 4:46 AM: Apple confirmed that Beats X will not ship until February.
